The Eurostar train
Like the TGV and the Thalys, the Eurostar is a fixed trainset – all trains have the same composition. It is a remarkable 18 cars long, with 766 seats occupying some 400 meters, 1320 feet or ¼ of a mile. Eurostar runs on various track clearances and is powered by three different electrical systems. This includes overhead wires in Belgium and France and a third rail in Britain.
In May 2006, Eurostar was entered in the Guiness Book of Records for the longest non-stop international train journey in the world – from London to Cannes, covering a distance of 1421km in seven and a half hours. Onboard the train were actors Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou, having named the train "The Da Vinci Code" before the departure from London.
Traveling with the Eurostar alongside a motorway can be rather amusing. It looks like the cars are barely moving, and trucks seem to stand still as the Eurostar passes them running some 120 mph faster than the motorway traffic.
